Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 First Impressions

Posted on April 25, 2008. Filed under: Linux, Ubuntu | Tags: , |

The good :

1. Installation is a piece of cake. Even for linux newbies. I’d say installing Ubuntu is easier than Windows Xp. Took me about 25 minutes to get it up and running.

2. The default wallpaper is darn good! And it comes pre-installed with compiz fusion – bling out of the box!

3. The repositories are very recent. The are the most upto date repos i’ve seen on Ubuntu.

4. 5 button mice work without any trouble on firefox. Back and front buttons work too.

5. Lot of internal updates that make the system snappier. Definitely smoother to multitask on.

The Bad :

1. Random lock-ups. They are rare, but very irritating. Maybe a particular problem with my install.

2. Need to restart for changes to network manager – really frustrating. Version 6.06 was the last where a restart wasn’t required.

3. Freeze on shut down. The system does not respond for a couple of minutes, and any user action is ignored. Either this is a MAJOR BUG, or its just me.

P.S : The servers are flooded as one may assume. This is definitely a landmark release for me. Hope i get these issues sorted out. And the repos are slow as hell. Consider upgrading from previous releases after a couple of days after all the frenzy dies down
